Understanding the Passage in the A World of Art Book
The passage in the book A World of Art illustrates an architectural style known as sustainable architecture. In this context, I understand that the information in the book provides some important details about this style which is also referred to as the “Green” architecture. The author begins by describing some of the monumental structures in Dubai which does not align with the environment (Sayre, 2016). From a personal perspective and the information from the passage, the reason for having such buildings in Dubai is because the desert conditions minimized the chances of practicing the green architecture. Also, what I comprehended on the term Green architecture is that the house approach seeks to reduce adverse effects of buildings to environments through the utilization of eco-friendly materials, natural energy, and the development of space to accommodate the green ecosystem. Alternatively, my notion is supported by the outlined details on the features of houses that reflect the green architecture. Sayre (2016), gives an example of a residential home at Sea Ranch California and as designed by Obie Bowman. The description of this particular building renders the structure as an ideal portrayal of Green architecture. For instance, construction is small, uses grass meadows on the roof, and has solar equipment for temperature stabilization and electric power generation.
Unfortunately, it is perceptible that the conditions required to accomplish green architecture is limited to environments with few human inhabitants. In other words, the passage shows how the densely populated areas cannot implement a sustainable architectural strategy. On the contrary, there are some cities such as Fukuoka in Japan that took a different kind of approach but still represented green architecture. That is, they set aside a specific area amidst the existing buildings and created a park. Besides, this location is seen to be the greenest part of the city. Alternatively, the construction of the green space was done by an Argentine-American architect who included a heavily planted pedestrian walkways and pools with a climbing waterfall (Sayre, 2016). With such an innovative style to capture the green architecture, I have realized that generating eco-friendly structures is possible even in urban environments with limited green spaces.
